I am excited to be teaching your child math this year. I wanted to introduce
myself to you and tell you a little about myself. This will be my first year at
Harrison Middle School. I have been teaching math for over 20 years and hope to help your child value its importance.
Through all of my years of teaching, I've learned that the main reason students are
not successful in math is simply because they are afraid of it and haven't connected it to their world.
I want students to see how it can connect to
everyday life and to see how much easier it can become when you change your
outlook. Please, encourage your child to do their best and help me keep "I can't" out of their vocabulary. Also, look for ways to show them how you use math everyday. Attitude is a little thing that can make a huge difference.
We will be following the Common Core State Standards of mathematics. In sixth
grade, the primary focus is on ratios and proportions. We will cover basic
concepts of the number system, geometry, and statistics (a word that is fun to
get the students to say:) A big leap this year will be the students’ first real
experiences with algebra and equations. Thats right! The students will leave the
sixth grade knowing how to solve equations!!!!
We will not be using a textbook, so you will see worksheets and projects from
various sources this year. Homework will be given, as it serves as a review for your child. All math work and notes will be kept
in the same 6th grade binder as work for the other classes. I will include some
graded work in the Monday folder for you to keep.
If you ever have any concerns, please contact me. Email is the
fastest and easiest way to reach me. I can reply to emails more timely than
phone calls. However, my conference time is at 10:45 if you would
like to speak with me in person or on the phone.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Mills
